Ex Officio, Faculty Steering Committee
Ed.D., University of Pennsylvania
Kiernan has led COACHE’s strategic planning, research, and development since 2008. Through the Collaborative, Kiernan provides counsel for senior administrators about the academic workplace and the effective use of data in a shared governance context. His work intersects variously with the activities of presidents, trustees, provosts, deans, institutional researchers, diversity officers, faculty senates, department chairs and, of course, faculty.
Much of Kiernan’s writing explores the condition of faculty at colleges and universities. His latest research interests concern shared governance, faculty departures, and the magnitude and effect of nonresponse in faculty surveys. In 2010 and in 2014, Kiernan received the Menges Award for Outstanding Research in Educational Development from the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education.
Prior to his work in the academy, Mathews launched new projects at Routledge Publishing and The LEGO Company. He holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s from Harvard, and a bachelor of arts from the University of Houston.
