Kiernan's research and writing explore the condition of faculty at colleges and universities, with particular emphasis on equity and on the effective engagement of all faculty in organizational change. At COACHE, Kiernan leads the project's strategic planning, research, and development. In these roles, he also provides counsel for senior administrators about the academic workplace and the use of faculty data in a shared governance context. His work intersects variously with the activities of provosts, deans, institutional researchers, diversity officers, sponsored projects, general counsel, institutional review boards, finance officers, faculty senates, and department chairs. At national conferences and on COACHE campuses, Kiernan regularly leads workshops, guides discussions, and provides counsel for academic policymakers.
In 2010 and in 2014, Kiernan received the Menges Award for Outstanding Research in Educational Development from the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education. Prior to his work in the academy, he launched new technology and education projects at Routledge Publishing and The LEGO Company. He holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s from Harvard, and a bachelor of arts from the University of Houston.
