Leadership of the academic workforce is a critical component of college administration--and a rich topic of scholarly inquiry. Yet, chief academic officers and senior faculty affairs administrators have little time to explore the latest research about the professoriate, much less connect it to their own practice as academic leaders. This one-of-a-kind program provides that opportunity: to be inspired by sound research, share evidence-based practices with like-minded colleagues, and network with subject matter experts and faculty affairs administrators.
This seminar will equip you with tools to manage the faculty enterprise and assist you in critically considering your own leadership capabilities. Presented as a joint offering of the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) and the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education (HIHE), this four-day on-campus seminar provides participants the rare opportunity to discuss--in a close community of practice--new research to improve the day-to-day business of faculty affairs.
The Seminar on Leadership of the Faculty will gather Chief Academic Officers and others with institution-wide oversight of the faculty domain to examine and reconsider, under a new lens and informed by the latest research, the persistent challenges of developing and leading college faculty. HIHE, with its long-standing expertise in executive education for higher education leaders, and COACHE, with its reputation for connecting research to practice in practical and tangible ways, are teaming up to present this unique learning experience to those responsible for faculty development, excellence and success.
Shared readings and completion of a leadership style self-inventory, both undertaken prior to the seminar, will form the basis for early conversation among participants. Large-class discussion and small cohort group conversations will introduce and engage topics that include change leadership of the academic workforce, evolving faculty workloads and rewards, and cultivating new avenues to increase faculty diversity. The seminar will invite you to inventively reconsider your role and the leadership you provide to your faculty, your administrative team, and your academic program as a whole. You will leave the seminar with new insights, fresh ideas, a greater sense of agency, and a new community of practice you can draw on in the months and years ahead.
